If you made your way here from Kelly's Korner,
welcome! I hope you enjoy your stay!
In 1952 my dad's grandmother, Trudie, began making the grandkids personalized stockings for Christmas. She made 11 stockings in all plus 2 for her sisters who never married. It quickly became a tradition for the mothers to make either their son-in-law or daughter-in-law's a stocking to match their spouses' stocking and eventually make their kids' stockings.

My parents have Mildred and Johnye's stockings, the 2 sisters. These were made back in 1967. My mom took these photos for me when I told her I was doing this post. Thanks mom! |
So when my sister got married, my mom made her husband a stocking. Then they had a daughter, Kaley, and my mom made her stocking as well. When Kaley gets married and has a child, my sister will make those stockings. And so on, and so on. The year on the name tag is the year they joined the family. So my husband, Matt, has 2009 on his and Caleb's will have his birth year obviously.
I am SO hoping this will be a tradition that
never ends. It is so special to all of us!
Ever since I was old enough to understand how everyone got their stockings I couldn't wait for my own child to get one! I was so impatient that I asked my mom to make our cat one to hold my excitement over until we had a baby, ha! (Jade loves it by the way...the jingle bells at least!)
Well, guess what I got today??
Caleb's stocking! I am IN LOVE with it! My mom did a great job! Can you believe she is not a sewer?! She looks like a pro to me. I hope I can make a stocking half this good for Caleb's wife and children. Seriously, she did an awesome job! Notice the elephant patch on the back...love!
We have a lot of traditions in my family, but this is one of my favorites. The best thing about these stockings, besides the attention to detail and being homemade, is that they are LONG stockings. Which mean you can stuff it with tons of candy and toys! My best Christmas memories as a child are walking down the hallway into the living room with my eyes shut tight then opening them up to see all the gifts Santa brought and then eyeing my stocking that was overflowing with candy and toys. We always see what's inside the stocking before opening any gifts. It's my favorite, y'all!
To this day, I beg my husband to stuff my stocking just like my parents did when I was little. Some things should never change, stockings on Christmas morning being one of them.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas with family, enjoying your traditions, making new ones and most importantly celebrating the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Merry Christmas
from the Morrisons!
What a writer you've become! This is at the top of my favorites of all the blogs you've written. Our stocking tradition is truly something special. Trudie probably never imagined it would turn into something that would span the generations to come. I wish she could see this.....maybe she has:))
ReplyDeleteThis is an AWESOME tradition. I love it! We don't have special stockings...but we do have big ones because I love the stuffed stocking, too!
ReplyDeleteHopping over from Kelly's Korner! I LOVE this tradition. What a wonderful thing to have in your family! Each stocking is made handmade with love and is so unique! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love the stockings! What a unique and special tradition.
ReplyDeleteMy cousin made my stocking for me when I was about three or so and I still use it. My mom made stockings for Sam, Dave and Rachel and those are the ones we will continue to use. They aren't trendy but they are so memorable.
That's awesome! I think the non-trendy ones are the best. So much more meaningful :)
