Last night was rough. Really rough. It started out good, then around 2:30am he started fussing. We let him fuss for a while to see if he would sooth himself back to sleep, sometimes that works. Well this time it didn't work. Matt got up to put his paci back in his mouth, he wouldn't take it. Matt comes back to our room, grabs his pillow and says he's just going to sleep on the living room floor with him. Caleb then started having fun! I told Matt to go back to bed, and I would rock him back to sleep. Still wasn't falling asleep. I then went to the last resort: I swaddled him. We ditched the swaddle a while back, but NOTHING was working, so it doesn't hurt to try. He was out in 2 seconds and didn't even move till we had to wake him up at 6am. Sad thing is, I didn't think of swaddling till 4:30am. So he only slept for an hour and a half before being woken up (we both work on Thursdays, so we have to feed him at 6am). And I didn't go back to sleep at all because he was so out that I couldn't see him breathing on the monitor, which I normally can, so I kept checking to see if he was breathing. Call me crazy, I know I am.
What the heck is going on?! Is it the dreaded 4 Month Sleep Regression? Ding ding ding. I've read up on the 4 month sleep regression and it says it is a nice blend of the following:
- Illness
- growth spurt
- teething
- changes in room temperature
- developmental milestones
Illness. Yes. He just got over a cold.
Growth spurt. Yes. He was a little chunky monkey last week and now he is back to being lean.
Teething. We think so. He is drooling, chewing on his entire hand, and putting every last toy in his mouth.
Changes in room temperature. Yes. It is hot (to say the least) in Texas and his room is also the warmest in the apartment for some reason. No matter how low we turn the AC down, it never gets below 74 in his room (a warm humid 74 degrees).
Developmental milestones. He just learned how to roll a few days ago.
So all of that mixed together equals a very AWAKE Caleb. I take back all those "bragging" comments I ever said about him being a great sleeper. I miss those nights! haha
So, tonight we will be buying a nice big fan for his room, a cool humidifier (for his stuffy nose) and saying a prayer he will sleep for more than an hour at a time.
I wish I drank coffee.
Since his room is so warm, maybe you could ditch the sleeper and just use a onesie during this hot spell. Just a thought....
ReplyDeleteWe tried that last night, and I think that little change made things worse. He probably felt like it was nap time because I don't use the sleep sack for naps. I guess we will swaddle him again tonight since it worked so well.
